There is this wonderful author and her name is Alice Walker. Have you ever heard of her? She writes many interesting stories, such as The Color Purple, Anything We Love Can Be Saved, and also The Flowers. She mostly writes about African American point of view, which makes the stories very interesting to read. In the short story, The Flowers, she shows very good imagery, tone, and Syntax.
Imagery is the use of vivid or figurative language to represent objects, actions, or ideas. In reading The Flowers by Alice Walker, you see imagery all through the story. She is very soft on her imagery but it gives you the feeling of knowing exact what it is/ was like. She uses nature a lot in the story. For example, she uses the changing of seasons to know that the story is about to change. She takes the story to warm and happy imagery to not so peaceful imagery once the story fold out. “She felt light and good in the warm sun.” this quote is in the beginning of the story, and it makes you feel and think about the summer and how it feels. “The air was damp, the silence close and deep.” Reading this quote, you can see the huge difference between the first one. This quote is very dark and straight to the point. Showing imagery makes the reader feel through the reading.
Tone is the writer's attitude toward the material and/or readers. Alice Walker changes her tone throughout the story. Changing her tone turns the story upside down and makes the reader feel very surprised and anxious to read ahead. The beginning of the story is very calming, summerful, and happy. Then readings on you see the tone change to more dark, gross and sad. “It seemed to Myop as she skipped lightly from the hen house to the pigpen to smokehouse that the days had never been as beautiful as these.” Reading this quote you see the author’s attitude is very warm. The reading the quote “It was then she stepped smack into his eyes.” You she is turning darker in attitude. The author’s tone shows you how they felt of feel about they are writing.
Syntax is the way in which words and sentences are placed together in the writing and the act of choosing specific words or even the meaning of each word or the overall meanings conveyed by the sentences. When reading this short story the first thing you notice is how short the paragraphs are. This makes the reader stop and think about what they just read. It helps the reader remember what they just read also. Most of the short paragraph brings attention to the main and most important details in the story. Also the syntax in the story is her use of chunky sentences. This puts a lot of emphasis on the details because she wakes the details very choppy. The way of her words conveys the story very well.
Alice Walker has a very unique way of writing and it is portrayed very well in the story, The Flowers. She shows imagery, tone, and syntax through the story, making the reader feel and understand the story thoroughly. Alice Walker has numerous books for readers to choose from and they will be able to see all of the aspects in the story. The Flowers is a story and flips upside down and shows all different hidden messages inside. This short story is very well written!
